If Turkey left NATO, what would be the immediate effects?

The real question is “is NATO a necessary organization at this age?” Or “was it ever necessary” from the Turkish point of view.

Imagine this: Turkey was never a member of NATO and the USSR decided to invade Turkey sometime in the early Fifties (or the Sixties or the Seventies or even the Eighties). Would the western powers permit this because there was no alliance between Turkey and the West? Of course not, the consequences would be dire.

As a result of joining NATO we had to keep an armed force which was way too powerful against anybody but the USSR and certainly too weak to fight the USSR. (Turkey was and still is the second most numerous NATO armed force after the US). We became 100% dependant to NATO countries for armemants and our economy never flourished because of the immense defense budgets.

Just as it was not beneficial for Turkey to join the alliance then it is not really necessary to stay in now. Turkish armed forces are more then a match to any threat from a non super power and any threats from super powers are checked by other super powers anyways.

So, in my opinion, if we declared that we are leaving NATO tomorrow the immediate consequences would be as follows:

  1. US would try to find a way to change the decision by any means short of actually declaring war. Perhaps start preaching something like the economic equivalent of “there are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq” to be used as an excuse for an embargo to Turkey.
  2. Terrorist activity within Turkey would reach to very high levels. No accusations here, terror groups would use the inevitable confusion in the military to their advantage.
  3. We would start seeing books, tv shows, films and news stories on how NATO had been bad for Turkey.
  4. If Turkey and Russia form a new alliance after Turkey’s exit, Greece would start thinking to leave as well and start secret negotiations with their traditional “big brother” Russia. If Turkey decides to stay unattached Greece will make NATO pay their foreign debt in exchange of new bases both in Greece and Southern Cyprus.
  5. Northern Cyprus Turkish Republic will decide to join Turkey and annexation will take place in a very short time.
  6. All discussions between Turkey and the EU will stop for good.
  7. About 1500 communists (all that is left) and each over 70 will march to Ataturk’s mausoleum singing military marches and each and every one of them will repeat saying “I told you so” and “finally” continuously.
  8. About 70 million people will cheer and start taking precautions for the coming bad times with that unexplainable stoicism Turkish people show when the going gets really rough. Remaing 10–12 million will be depressed and terribly unhappy.
  9. Turkish banking system will need a plan to cope with the possibilty of not being able to make US Dollar transfers because of the possible embargo.
  10. The impact on the media would be very wide and powerful and the world would hopefully see the folly of trying to build empires under the pretense of democracy instead of creating a better world for the people through the brotherhood of humanity and democratic ideals which helped start the most marvelous political experiment of humankind in North America two and a half centuries ago. It can even be asserted that even more wealth could be accumulated if the benevolent path had been chosen.
